The Hon. John Kerin, MP, Federal Treasurer, announced the national winners of the Mobil Managing the Australian Economy competition at the Australian National University on 31 August 1991.

Eight teams of final year school students each representing a State or Territory filled the role of Treasurer and made economic and policy decisions using a computer simulation of the Australian economy.

This year’s eight finalists were drawn from nearly 450 Australian secondary schools in the country’s largest and most important economics training program.

Teams or four student were asked to determine monetary and fiscal policy and make changes in government spending, interest rates and tax rates for the next ten years. Teams scored points for increases in national income and lose points for high inflation and unemployment levels.

Steve Dodt, Team Captain and his team representing Casuarina Secondary College from the Northern Territory, were announced by there Federal Treasurer as silver medalists in the National Final of the Mobil Managing the Australian Economy Competition, finishing just behind the team from Queensland.
